Champs Sports Bar opens in North Midland, keeps Permian Basin pride strong and true

Nothing says West Texas likes a Texas Tech and Dallas Cowboys-themed sports bar better, outfitted with more than 10 TVs and a big screen hanging above walls filled with jerseys and memorabilia. Parked in the Mall at the corner of Garfield Street and Loop 250 in North Midland, Champs Sports Bar has officially opened, full of excitement and hope.

Manager Christina Alonzo told The Reporter-Telegram that the establishment opened in Lubbock in November 2019. However, the pandemic forced a closure in May 2020. Now mom and pop aim to bring the same energetic energy and a family space. to Midland for the second round.

Hot bites

On brand with their Texas sports team theme, Champs embraces all parts of the game by renaming their foods. For example, entrees are known as “First Down’s”, salads as “Putting Greens”, large plates as “Homerun Platters”, sides as “Benchwarmers”, and children’s menu under the name “Little Raiders”.

Some menu items include a mound of onion rings and a ranch known as the “Olympic Rings,” a fried chicken sandwich dipped in homemade honey butter, a 12-ounce “Rockhound Ribeye,” macaroni with cheese, fried okra and corn dogs for the kids.

Still, Alonzo said customers can’t come to Champs without trying on two items. The first one? “Cheesehead cheese sticks.” Although they may look like a typical mozzarella stick, Alonzo said their light spicy kick sets them above the rest, and the creamy ranch sauce is the icing on the cake. The last? One of Champs house burgers. Handcrafted daily with fresh ingredients, these patties are thick on Texas Toast and can be found under “Big Ol’ Cheeseburger” or “Patty ‘Mahomes’ Melt.”

Cold sips

With a full bar, the red and black establishment offers everything one could want. Happy hour, which runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., includes $1 off draft beers. Looking for a local touch? Have a glass of Midland Logger from Tall City Brewing Co.

Alonzo also said the crew hopes the frozen machines will be up and running this week, which will add frozen margaritas, pina coladas and daiquiris to the list.

General atmosphere

A few aspects set Champs apart from chain grills, such as Buffalo Wild Wings or Pluckers. It is first and foremost a family business. Strong community ties make Midland unique, but sometimes Midlanders only flock to the big names. Supporting local restaurants keeps the city fresh, innovative, and populated with healthy people and hard workers. Next? The staff. Alonzo, from Midland herself, leads a down-to-earth team of friendly and helpful staff, showing up gracefully even on opening night. Finally, the slightly smaller layout allows patrons to have a more intimate dining experience, something typically absent from sports bars. Even through the rivalry, the Red Raiders, Longhorns, Miners and Aggies can find a sense of comfort and familiarity in the four-walled building.
