Check out Derby town center’s thriving bar with celebrities

Those who ventured into Derby after 6pm have probably noticed one of the newer bars in town.

Walk around the Market Square and you’ll probably hear the place before you see it.

With an eclectic mix of 90s and 2000s classics audible across the square, a red carpet entrance and a rather iconic velvet rope, it’s unmistakably Danny B’s.

Owned by Derby actor Lee Baker, the bar opened in November last year and was an instant hit.

Over the past four months, it has thrived with customers of all ages looking to get their dose of 1990s and 2000s hit any night of the week.

Lee said: “Since it hasn’t really been open for that long, it’s [the bar] is doing really well.

“But things are going really well, I have to admit.

“And obviously we’re still sort of in this Covid situation, but I can’t fault him.

Lee is no stranger to the hospitality industry, the actor has also managed nightclubs in Greece, so Danny B’s is not his first venture into the nightlife business.

Due to his work in entertainment, a number of celebrities have agreed to come to the bar, including Benidorm stars Tyson Fury and Olly Murs.

Sandra Martin from Gogglebox is also a regular at the venue.

Naturally, Danny B’s attracts most of its visitors on weekends, and Lee noted that they usually have to operate a “one-on-one” policy after around 7 p.m.

The venue was once a retro-themed bar and gin lounge called Isabelles, but Lee transformed the downtown spot in just 13 days.

It’s barely recognizable now, and the 3D wallpaper and multicolored LED disco floor add a turn-of-the-millennium touch.

The former 60s-themed long had an over-25 policy, but the Derby local has reduced the age limit to 18.

He named the spot Danny B’s in memory of his brother who was sadly murdered in 2013.

“Obviously Danny B’s reputation is very important because everything I do here is for my brother.

“We have great staff and great customers – a lot of them come through him too,” he added.

Lee, who has been a DJ for 22 years, has managed to spend more time at the bar than he originally planned, but he will start filming a new movie next month and cut his time on the premises.

He said: “In a month I’ll be doing a movie called Mind Hunters starring Daniel Radcliffe and Ewan McGregor.”

“But because I did nothing [films] Since the bar opened, it’s a little easier.”

When we announced the opening of Danny B’s, Sandra Martin from Gogglebox was visiting to help promote, but Lee tells us she’s now become a permanent member of the team.

The 44-year-old actor said: “She really became the face of Danny B.

“Everyone likes to come see her and say hello.

“We put up a little sign outside inviting people to come in for some sort of meet and greet with Sandra.

“It’s just another thing we do [along with playing solely nineties and noughties music] which is different.”

“I’m just very happy to tell you the truth.

“I have a good clientele.

Danny B’s is open to everyone from 6 p.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, and admission is free.
