March 4 – Two former businesses will soon have new life as places to grab a bite to eat or have a drink after the Chattanooga Beer & Wrecker Board approved applications for Mariscos Vallarta at East Brainerd and Boneyard Bar on Station Street.

Mariscos Vallarta will open in the former Shoney’s off Shallowford Village Drive near the Hamilton Place mall, and Boneyard Bar will open in a few months in the former Brinx warehouse on Station Street.

Alexandro Leon told the board during the bid process that Mariscos Vallarta will be a seafood and Mexican grill with a full bar open seven days a week. It will employ 20 people.

Jared Padovani said he and his two Boneyard partners are working to turn the 3,500 square foot location into a “neighborhood bar” with a variety of bar food, snacks and a full bar.

He told the board that he and his partners are aware of some of the issues that have recently made the news regarding the Beer Board and in particular The Blue Light, which has been cited for 10 violations since November. Blue Light is located next to The Comedy Catch and across from Regans and Westbound.

Boneyard will be on the same side of the street as the final two, and Padovani said he and his partners are “taking [security] very seriously.” The site will have a fence at the rear with a separate entrance and a gate and large planters at the front, as well as security guards at both entrances, he said.

Padovani said the space has a capacity of 144 guests and may host live music in the future, but has no plans to do so at this time.

In other business, the board approved beer licenses for two long-running fundraisers, both of which are moving to new locations due to COVID-19.

The Chattanooga Breakfast Rotary Club’s fifth Brew Skies Festival will take place March 12 from noon to 4 p.m. at AT&T Field and will feature 70 craft beers, food and live entertainment with Neon Moon and Over Easy. Weather permitting, vendors will be set up on the outfield warning track.

It had been held at Chattanooga Brewing Co. and Glenn Miller Gardens at Chattanooga Choo Choo.

Also, the Pink! The gala benefiting the CHI Memorial Foundation and the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center will take place on the same day and has moved to the First Horizon Pavilion, Chattanooga Convention Center. The evening will include silent and live auctions, a gourmet dinner and dancing to Party on the Moon.

A member of the Santa Rosa City Council who was among the patrons of a local bar on Saturday night, just before a fatal shooting took place in his parking lot, said on Monday that the incident in no way reflected the atmosphere positive that the company brings to the community.

Eddie Alvarez said he spent about an hour visiting voters at The Whiskey Tip, which hosted a rap and hip hop show on Saturday night. He said he left the bar about 15 or 20 minutes before the shooting happened at around 9:15 p.m.

Located near the southeast corner of Sebastopol and Stony Point roads, the popular nightclub attracts a cross section of Sonoma County patrons. It hosts all kinds of events, such as wrestling matches, fashion shows and live concerts featuring artists from all musical genres.

Just before the business opened at 3 p.m. on Monday, an employee addressed questions about the shooting to its owner, whose name he did not disclose. Neither the owner nor the director of the company could be reached for comment.

Saturday’s performance drew a crowd of around 100, the board member said, adding that the festivities were marred by the shooting.

“It was a great event that was marred, marked by this tragedy,” said Alvarez, who represents District 1, which includes Sebastopol and Stony Point. “It’s definitely an unnecessary loss of life. Someone has lost their life in a good place.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office identified the shooting victim as Kenneth McDaniel, a 27-year-old Santa Rosa resident.

Another resident of Santa Rosa, Fogatia Fuiava, 29, has been identified as a suspect.

He was arrested for murder around 2:45 a.m. Monday along Anteeo Way near Moorland Avenue in an area just outside the southern city limit and nearly 4 miles from Whiskey Tip .

Fuiava is being held without bond at the Santa Rosa Main Adult Detention Center, prison records show.

McDaniel is at least the third homicide victim in Santa Rosa this year.

Ahead of Saturday, the most recent homicide in the city took place on July 5 when someone opened fire on a crowd that had gathered at an impromptu fireworks display along Beachwood Drive.

Even a single homicide is too much, Alvarez said, but Saturday’s incident is particularly rare because it happened in the context of a business.

Police found McDaniel unconscious in the parking lot on Saturday night. Officers provided him with medical treatment before he was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, the Santa Rosa Police Department said.

Little was immediately known about McDaniel, but Sonoma County Superior Court records show he had felony and misdemeanor cases against him dating back several years. The crimes included allegations of burglary, assault and possession of tear gas.

Investigators believe two people armed with handguns approached McDaniel in the parking lot and shot him. They then fled the area, police said.

Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Chris Mahurin said McDaniel and Fuiava knew each other, but were not friends. It appears that an argument preceded the shooting, but a specific motive is under investigation.

Mahurin agreed that the Whiskey Tip “is not known to be a place of violence”.

It opened about six to eight years ago on a property previously occupied by a bar called Giga’s, which had been around for decades.

Whiskey Tip sits at a busy intersection with heavy traffic and several small businesses, and is the only bar in the Sebastopol Road corridor, Alvarez said.

A long bar runs parallel to the right side of the building and several tables and seats are visible to the left, with additional space at the back on the patio. A sign above the patio door indicates that the bar has a maximum indoor capacity of 65.

A makeshift memorial for McDaniel has been set up at the edge of the Whiskey Tip parking lot against a chain-link fence separating the property from a building with several businesses, including a True Value hardware store.

A Mexican food trailer sat next to the memorial on Monday and several patrons watched the candles laid out for McDaniel, wondering what had happened and why someone had died.

A few yards away, a Whiskey Tip customer was sitting in his car waiting for the bar to open. He said he knew nothing about the shooting, but had been frequenting the bar for several years and had no intention of stopping.

Democratic press reporter Matt Pera contributed to this story.

[ad_1]

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The former Magnolia club space in Cleveland’s Flats district has morphed into Goodnight John Boy, a 70s-themed disco bar and restaurant.

The space, located at 1167 Front Ave., celebrates its grand opening this weekend.

The bar will host a VIP party from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 21 and will then open to the public. On Saturday May 22, the VIP evening is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the bar open to the public afterwards.

The space is distinctly different from the nightclub atmosphere of Magnolia. Rather, co-owner Bobby Rutter aimed to update the bar in a “70s basement vibe.”

“We emptied the whole place, knocked down walls. We did a complete makeover, ”said Rutter. “It has disco-inspired technology – a light-up dance floor, other fun animated lights.”

(This includes a disco ball, of course.)

And what would a disco bar be without disco music? Rutter said Goodnight John Boy will feature local DJs from the 70s and 80s, as well as modern artists influenced by the era, like Bruno Mars and Dua Lipa.

The space will focus on its bar, but it will have two items on its food menu: pizza and chicken fingers. The ingredients were imported from Kesté Pizzeria in New York.

“It’s a simple, fun and retro menu,” said Rutter. “It’s two items – order when you want, we serve all night.”

Normal Goodnight John Boy hours will begin next week for Memorial Day weekend: 4:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. Friday and noon – 2:00 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays. For now, the club will limit occupancy and enforce social distancing on the dance floor, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Rutter is hopeful that, as coronavirus vaccination rates are on the rise in Ohio, the restrictions will be lifted. He’s already seen a change in customer habits and how many people are heading to Cleveland’s nightlife.

“With the number of people vaccinated, it’s a better eviction. The 50+ crowd is now coming out and comfortable. These are positive indicators, ”said Rutter. “In the last couple of weeks things have been moving in the right direction… I think it’s more fun going out now than it was six or seven months ago.

Goodnight John Boy isn’t the only property Rutter is hosting this weekend; he’s also opening the FWD Day + Night Club for the first time since July, to begin preparing his staff for Memorial Day weekend and early June shows in space. FWD, which often hosts touring DJs and musicians, will host Kaskade for a show on June 2. Rutter said the show was about to sell out.

“It’s good to get back to it. FWD is strictly in the entertainment business, and that industry has been hit the hardest without any shows, ”said Rutter. “Now that the venues are starting to reopen, the demand for this level of entertainment is very high. “
