New Sports Bar Opens at Former Fountain on Main Location

This media has spoken to Hamilton before during the pandemic when The Ole Brick Tavern was reopening for takeout. She said they were originally a pub that served food, but due to the pandemic they had to switch to a restaurant that served alcohol.

Hamilton said it encouraged her and her husband to start thinking about a restaurant.

“When we started doing this and saw how much people enjoyed the food, I kept reminding my husband that this was a bar serving food,” Hamilton said.

The Bullpen Sports Bar will serve “everything but chicken”, Hamilton said.

She explained that other sports bars in the area focus on chicken and chicken wings, so they wanted to be different. The Bullpen’s menu will emphasize beef and pork serving burgers, pulled pork, burnt ends, specialty sandwiches and more. Side dishes will include hand-cut fries, steakhouse green beans and smoked gouda mac and cheese. Hamilton said they will also have their own smoker on site.

“We work there every day. I train my staff. My boss comes aboard,” Hamilton said. “It’s going much faster than expected.”

Hamilton told this news outlet they were drawn to downtown because of the Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) and entertainment district.

“We could do whatever restaurant we wanted, whatever vibe we wanted, plus we could be part of the revitalization of downtown,” Hamilton said.

She explained that she had contacted the City of Springfield before when she was looking for space downtown and that led her to the Bushnell Building.

The fountain on Main closed on August 31 after being in space for 19 years. According to the owner of the Bushnell building, Jim Lagos, the business was rented on a monthly basis.

Hamilton said the space will most definitely have a different feel as they complete the remodel. The only thing guests will recognize are the seats and tables, she added.

The Bullpen Sports Bar will have a good atmosphere and will be a good place to come and sit and watch a game, Hamilton said.

She said they look forward to meeting new people as they embark on this new adventure.

The Bullpen Sports Bar is recruiting a chef and a line cook. Interested persons can contact the owners via Facebook.
