Aspers Casino in Newcastle has undergone a stunning £500,000 transformation as it seeks to attract more than gamblers and gamblers through its doors.

The well-known venue inside The Gate has spent months creating a stylish bar, called Freya’s Bar, and a new entertainment area where visitors can enjoy live music as well as sport on the big screen.

It comes as Aspers bosses seek to offer “more than just a traditional casino” in hopes of attracting new customers who want to enjoy a relaxed day or evening with friends.

Aspers chief executive David Tait said: “Aspers has always been open to everyone and we’ve always had lots of bars and restaurants, but people probably didn’t really know where they were because they were a bit hidden.

“We have revamped the restaurant area and added two new bars to it. We have an entertainment area with live music every Friday and Saturday night from 9 p.m.

“It has a big stage and big screens showing all the sport live. [We wanted to create] a new atmosphere and a new space where people can come in, relax, have a beer and a bite to eat, and have a good night’s sleep without necessarily having to play.

“It’s about demonstrating that we are more than just a traditional casino. We have traditional games, slots, roulette and blackjack [but] also have entertainment, cool bars and spaces for different types of groups.”

David added: “A traditional view of a casino can sometimes be that it’s a bit dark and dreary and it’s definitely not that. We try to open it up so people understand that it’s not that it’s not just about games.”

The place, which has been open for 17 years, employs 150 people and is open from noon to 4 a.m. every day.

Manager David said it was great the company was able to invest in the town following the challenges the leisure industry has faced during the pandemic.

“I think everyone in the leisure industry will know that coming out of Covid has been very difficult and everyone has had their own challenges,” he said.

“It’s something really positive for us, we’re investing in the business, in the city and in jobs. It looks really cool and I want the people of Newcastle to come and see it.”
