Ex-Dragon Paul Young reopens Newport’s Riverside sports bar

A POPULAR sports bar in Newport will reopen under new management tomorrow – just in time for the bank holiday weekend.

The Riverside Sports Bar and Kitchen in Clarence Place near the River Usk has been taken over by Paul Young and Ben Periam from the Pod – located across the road.

The owner of the Pod, former Dragons hooker Paul Young, is taking over the lease of the Riverside from the former owners Stonegate.

He said the goal was to keep the venue as a sports bar to serve the needs of sports fans, including billiards and darts, as well as Newport County AFC and the Dragons.

Mr Young said the aim was to ‘bring fans back here’ and that he was ‘looking to make Clarence Place a fun destination with bars and food and more job opportunities for Newport”.

Located near downtown Newport and Rodney Parade, the Riverside Sports Bar and Kitchen can accommodate up to 250 people in an open-plan space.

The Riverside will be open tomorrow, (Good Friday, from 1 p.m., and from 2 p.m. on Saturday.

This weekend will be the soft launch for the venue, with an official opening coming in a few weeks.

Opening hours once operational remain to be confirmed.

The venue will start serving food in about three or four weeks and will offer all the classics of an American sports bar as well as traditional pub fare.

Executive chef Ben Periam also mentioned wanting to bring live music back.

“We want to create variety at Clarence Place,” he said. “We are delighted to help bring the region back to life.

“I’ve worked all around Newport and this is a great opportunity to get this up and running, I’m looking forward to it.

“Think more regeneration is coming to Newport – people need to have a vision and take the risk.”

Tomas Kosler will also leave the Pod to become the general manager of Riverside.
