Best of the Beach 2022: Neighborhood bar, Wine list (Restaurant), Sports bar
Neighborhood bar
Shellback
One of California’s most expensive residential neighborhoods has a favorite neighborhood bar that doesn’t live up to expectations. Rather than a whimsical mixology palace with a high-style interior, locals prefer an unassuming seaside hangout that looks worn around the edges. It’s probably a mixture of nostalgia and habit for people who grew up here, but something entirely different for those who didn’t. They moved to South Bay to be the kind of people who would hang out at the Shellback, spend an hour or two with beers, burgers and friends. If they don’t have friends when they come in, they might have them by the time they go out – it’s that kind of place.

Wine list (Restaurant)
The bottle inn
Wine Spectator magazine is of the opinion that the Bottle Inn has an excellent wine list – they have won this award four years in a row as of 2019. South Bayans have known this for much longer as they voted for wine prices for the Bottle Inn for decades. It’s not just that they have rare and expensive offerings that would impress any connoisseur, but that they have great selections at all price points, as well as a staff that treats customers with respect. , whether they order a $35 everyday wine or a $500 Nebbiolo. Some excellent wines are available by the glass, which doesn’t happen everywhere, so you can experience the best and educate your palate. Whether you’re a casual drinker or someone who has some of these premium bottles at home, they understand your needs.

Big burgers, big screens and a big heart make Grunions a perennial favorite among sports fans. Photo courtesy of Grunions
Grunions
The place doesn’t look like much from the outside, a plain beige building with a little red sign. Many people have walked past it hundreds of times without noticing. Inside, Grunion’s has character and character, the latter in the form of staff who greet many customers by name. It’s a quirky, friendly spot with painted acoustic tiles on the ceiling commemorating various regulars and occasions, but most patrons have their eyes glued to the screens rather than the overhead. They snack on good conventional bar food, cheer on their favorite modern gladiators, quaff beers and basic but well-made cocktails, and enjoy a friendly time celebrating the game of the day.
