Banky’s Sports Bar and Grill will open on May 6
Tim Collier said he’s always dreamed of opening his own soul food restaurant, and on May 6, that’s exactly what he will be doing. Banky’s sports bar and grill will be a family restaurant and bar, offering a variety of food, drinks and activities for the enjoyment of the whole community.
Banky’s is located at 1109 W. 9th St., where the Sandbar Sports Grill & Bar was previously located.
Collier said he named the restaurant after his late uncle, a huge sports fan who has spent years of his life coaching and supporting young people in his neighborhood.
“He was known throughout the community, especially by the children,” Collier said. “He coached baseball and football for little league organizations here for years. We wanted to honor his name.
Banky’s will regularly offer pizza, chicken wings, burgers and fries. But on Sunday, Collier will focus on soul foods like fried chicken, meatloaf and collard greens.
While cities like Louisville have an array of soul food restaurants, Collier said Owensboro needs places with home cooked meals. Collier said his brother would be the full-time chef at Banky’s.
In addition to food and drink, guests can enjoy karaoke, open mic nights, a game of pool, a DJ, and six TVs spread throughout the building for watching sporting events. Collier will also have a VIP booth available for certain events, and guests can hire the venue for special occasions, such as birthdays and wedding receptions.
Most importantly for Collier, he wants Banky’s to be a warm and welcoming place where everyone is welcome.
“We will not refuse anyone. This is open to everyone, ”Collier said. “Be a friendly neighbor, come see us.”
Banky’s will be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
